Radonkonzentration

Radonkonzentration refers to the amount of radon gas present in a given volume of air. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is a byproduct of the decay of uranium and thorium in soil and rock. It is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, making it undetectable without specialized equipment. Radon can accumulate in enclosed spaces, such as homes and buildings, particularly in basements and lower levels where it can enter through cracks in foundations or walls.

The measurement of radonkonzentration is typically expressed in becquerels per cubic meter (Bq/m³) or picocuries per liter (pCi/L). These units represent the number of radioactive decays occurring per second within a specific volume of air. Exposure to elevated levels of radon is a significant risk factor for lung cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) has established guidelines for acceptable radonkonzentration levels in indoor air, recommending that remedial actions be taken if levels exceed 100 Bq/m³.

Identifying and mitigating high radonkonzentration is an important public health concern. Testing for radon can be done using passive or active measurement devices, which are readily available. If high levels are detected, ventilation improvements, sealing of cracks and openings, or the installation of sub-slab depressurization systems can effectively reduce radon concentrations. Regular monitoring is also recommended, especially in areas known to have higher geological concentrations of uranium and thorium.
