Radonaltistusta refers to exposure to radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas. Radon is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, making it undetectable without specialized equipment. It is formed from the radioactive decay of uranium, which is present in small amounts in soil, rock, and water.

Radon can seep into buildings from the ground through cracks in foundations, walls, and floors, as well as through plumbing and ventilation systems. It can also accumulate in indoor air. Prolonged exposure to elevated levels of radon is a known risk factor for lung cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking.

The concentration of radon in a building can vary significantly depending on geographical location, soil composition, and building construction. Testing for radon is the only way to determine indoor radon levels. Various testing methods are available, including short-term and long-term detectors.

If high radon levels are detected, mitigation measures can be implemented to reduce exposure. Common mitigation techniques include sealing cracks and openings, improving ventilation systems, and installing sub-slab depressurization systems. These systems draw radon from beneath the building and vent it safely outdoors. Public health organizations recommend testing homes for radon and taking action to mitigate if levels are found to be above recommended action levels.
