Radiomarker

Radiomarker is a term that can refer to several related concepts in the field of radioactivity and its applications. Broadly, it signifies a substance or entity that can be detected using its radioactive properties. This detection is typically achieved through instruments that measure ionizing radiation, such as Geiger counters or scintillation detectors.

In nuclear medicine and diagnostic imaging, a radiomarker is a radioactive isotope, or a compound containing such an isotope, that is introduced into the body. These radiomarkers are designed to accumulate in specific organs or tissues, or to be processed by particular metabolic pathways. By tracing the radiation emitted from the radiomarker, medical professionals can visualize internal structures, assess organ function, and diagnose various diseases. For example, Technetium-99m is a commonly used radiomarker in SPECT (Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography) imaging.

Beyond medical uses, the term radiomarker can also apply to radioactive sources used in industrial applications or scientific research for tracking, tracing, or calibrating equipment. For instance, a radiomarker might be incorporated into a material to monitor its wear or movement in a process. The key characteristic is the ability to detect and quantify the presence and location of the marker through its radioactivity.
