Radiolääkehoidot, also known as radionuclide therapy or nuclear medicine therapy, represent a specialized area of medicine that utilizes radioactive substances to diagnose and treat diseases. In the context of treatment, this involves administering small, controlled doses of radioactive isotopes, often attached to specific molecules that target diseased cells or tissues. These isotopes emit radiation, which can then damage or destroy the targeted cells.

The primary application of radiolääkehoidot is in the treatment of cancer. For example, radioactive iodine (I-131) is commonly used to treat thyroid cancer and hyperthyroidism. In this therapy, the patient ingests or is injected with iodine-131, which is preferentially absorbed by thyroid cells. Another example is peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT), which uses radioactive isotopes attached to targeting peptides to treat neuroendocrine tumors.
