Radiokarbdateerimise, also known as radiocarbon dating, is a widely used scientific technique for determining the age of organic material. It is based on the principle that radiocarbon, a naturally occurring radioactive isotope of carbon, is constantly being formed in the upper atmosphere through the interaction of cosmic rays with atmospheric nitrogen. Plants absorb radiocarbon along with other carbon isotopes, and animals absorb radiocarbon by eating plants. When an organism dies, it stops exchanging carbon with its environment, and the amount of radiocarbon in its tissues begins to decay at a known rate.

The radiocarbon dating method compares the ratio of radiocarbon to stable carbon isotopes in a sample to the ratio in a living organism. The half-life of radiocarbon is approximately 5,730 years, which means that after 5,730 years, half of the radiocarbon in a sample will have decayed. By measuring the remaining radiocarbon activity and comparing it to the expected activity for the sample's age, scientists can estimate when the organism died.

Radiokarbdateerimise has been instrumental in archaeology, geology, and other fields that require accurate dating of ancient materials. It has helped to refine our understanding of the past by providing precise age estimates for artifacts, fossils, and other organic remains. However, the method has its limitations, including the assumption that the amount of radiocarbon in the atmosphere has remained constant over time, which is not entirely accurate due to factors like changes in solar activity and volcanic eruptions. Additionally, the method is most effective for dating materials up to about 50,000 years old, as older materials have very little radiocarbon remaining.
