Radikaalikäynnistys refers to a process in chemistry where a reaction is initiated by the formation of free radicals. Free radicals are atoms or molecules with one or more unpaired electrons, making them highly reactive. This unpaired electron is the key to their ability to initiate a chemical chain reaction.

The process typically involves a step called initiation, where the radicals are generated. This can be achieved through various means, such as the homolytic cleavage of a weak covalent bond, often induced by heat or light. For example, in the thermal decomposition of a peroxide, a radical can be formed. Alternatively, certain initiators, like azo compounds, can readily decompose to produce radicals upon heating.

Once formed, these radicals can then participate in a propagation step. In this stage, a radical reacts with a stable molecule, abstracting an atom or group and generating a new radical. This new radical can then react with another molecule, continuing the chain. This cycle of radical formation and reaction is what sustains the reaction.

The reaction can also involve termination steps, where two radicals combine to form a stable molecule, or a radical reacts with an impurity, effectively ending the chain. The balance between propagation and termination determines the overall rate and outcome of the radical-initiated reaction. Many important industrial processes, such as polymerization reactions, rely on radical-initiated mechanisms for their efficient operation.
