Radiaatoreid

Radiaatoreid are heat-emitting devices used in space heating systems to transfer thermal energy from a heat source to a room. They typically rely on convection and radiant heat and are common in both older and modern buildings. Radiators can be powered by hydronic (hot water) systems, steam systems, or electricity.

Hydronic radiators circulate hot water from a boiler or heat pump through metal sections, where heat is released into the room. They come in materials such as cast iron, steel, or aluminum and in designs ranging from traditional column units to flat panels.

Steam radiators heat by steam from a boiler, and they remain in use primarily in older installations; they warm rooms quickly but are less common in new builds due to efficiency and control challenges.

Electric radiators use electrical resistance elements and can function as portable or wall-mounted units, suitable where central heating is unavailable or used for supplemental heat.

Key considerations include placement to maximize convective flow, unobstructed front surfaces, and compatibility with the building's heating system. In hydronic setups, balancing and thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) help control room temperatures and energy use.

Maintenance involves regular cleaning, bleeding to remove trapped air, and checking for leaks and corrosion. Radiator efficiency depends on system design, insulation, and controls rather than the radiator alone.

Historically popular in Europe and parts of North America, radiators have evolved from heavy cast-iron columns to compact aluminum and steel designs with precise temperature control. The term radiaatoreid is used in Estonian contexts to describe these devices within home heating installations.
