Radarijärjestelmän, commonly referred to as a radar system, is a detection system that uses radio waves to determine the range, angle, or velocity of objects. It comprises a transmitter that emits radio waves, a receiver that detects the reflected waves, and signal processing capabilities to interpret the data. Radar systems are widely used in various applications, including air traffic control, weather forecasting, navigation, and military surveillance.

The fundamental principle behind radar operation is the reflection of electromagnetic waves. The transmitter generates pulses of radio waves, which are directed towards a target. When these waves encounter an object, they are reflected back towards the radar's receiver. The time it takes for the reflected waves to return, along with their frequency shift (Doppler effect), provides information about the target's distance and speed, respectively. The direction from which the reflected waves are received indicates the target's angular position.

Different types of radar systems exist, each optimized for specific tasks. For instance, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) uses radio waves to image subsurface structures, while Doppler radar is crucial for measuring precipitation movement in meteorology. Advanced radar systems can achieve high resolution and detect even small or fast-moving objects. The development of radar technology has significantly contributed to enhanced safety, efficiency, and situational awareness across numerous fields.
