Raamattojen

Raamattojen is a term used to describe wooden shutters or window coverings, but more specifically in the context of traditional Finnish architecture and craftsmanship. The name literally translates to "battens" or "shutters" in Finnish.

Traditionally, raamattojen were handmade from wood and consisted of vertical wooden battens or slats that were hung over windows to control light and regulate temperature. These slats were often made from locally sourced wood such as spruce or fir, and were chosen for their durability and resistance to the elements. The wooden slats were typically thin, around 1-2 cm thick, and spaced at intervals to allow for airflow while maintaining views.

The craftsmanship involved in creating raamattojen was a valuable skill passed down through generations in Finnish society. Woodworkers would carefully select and cut the wooden slats to precise measurements, before assembling them onto a sturdy frame. The finished raamattojen not only provided functionality but also added a decorative element to the traditional Finnish farmhouse or rural cottage.

Today, raamattojen can still be found in older Finnish buildings, particularly those that have been preserved or restored to maintain their traditional character. However, the use of modern materials and technology has also led to the mass production of raamattojen, making them more accessible to homeowners and interior designers.
