RTV silicone refers to Room Temperature Vulcanizing silicone. This designation indicates a type of silicone rubber that cures or solidifies at ambient temperatures, typically between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. Unlike high-temperature vulcanizing (HTV) silicones that require heat to cure, RTV silicones undergo a chemical reaction with moisture in the air or a two-part mixing process to achieve their solid, elastic state.

There are two primary types of RTV silicones: one-part and two-part systems. One-part RTV silicones are commonly found in sealant and adhesive cartridges. They release a byproduct during the curing process, such as acetic acid, oxime, or alcohol, depending on the specific formulation. Two-part RTV silicones consist of a base compound and a curing agent, which are mixed together to initiate the vulcanization process. This type often offers faster cure times and can be formulated for specific properties.

RTV silicones are known for their excellent flexibility, resistance to extreme temperatures, UV radiation, and chemicals, as well as their good electrical insulating properties.
