Recovery Point Objective: in disaster recovery and business continuity planning, RPO denotes the maximum tolerable period of data loss measured in time. It indicates how up-to-date data must be to resume operations after an incident. RPO is paired with Recovery Time Objective (RTO), which defines allowable downtime. Achieving a low RPO requires data replication, frequent backups, or continuous data protection, often across multiple sites. The choice of RPO reflects risk tolerance and cost; industries such as finance typically require near-zero or minute-level RPO, while others may tolerate longer intervals. The term should be specified in DR/BCP policies and tested regularly.
