RIStiedosto is a Finnish term that translates to "RIS file" in English. It refers to a plain text file format commonly used for storing and exchanging bibliographic data. RIS is an acronym for Research Information Systems, the company that developed the format. The file format consists of distinct fields, each identified by a two-letter code, followed by a tab and the corresponding data. For example, "TI" might represent the title of a publication, "AU" the author, and "PY" the publication year.

These files are widely used in academic and research contexts for importing and exporting references between different reference management software, such as EndNote, Zotero, and Mendeley. Libraries and databases often provide options to download search results in RIS format, allowing users to easily add references to their personal collections. The standardized structure of RIS files ensures compatibility and facilitates the efficient management of large numbers of citations.
