RAWkuvaaminen refers to the process of capturing digital image data in its unprocessed, raw format. Unlike JPEG files, which are processed by the camera's internal software and compressed, RAW files contain the direct data from the image sensor. This means they retain more information, including a wider dynamic range and color depth.

The advantage of shooting in RAW is the increased flexibility it offers during post-processing. Photographers can make significant adjustments to exposure, white balance, contrast, and color saturation without the degradation of image quality that often occurs when editing JPEGs. This makes RAW ideal for situations where precise control over the final image is desired, or when the shooting conditions are challenging.

However, RAW files are larger in size than JPEGs, requiring more storage space. They also need to be processed using specialized software, such as Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop (with Camera Raw), or Capture One, before they can be shared or printed. This extra step in the workflow can be a drawback for those who need to quickly share images or prefer a simpler editing process.

Most modern digital cameras, including DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, offer the option to shoot in RAW, often alongside JPEG. Some cameras allow for RAW + JPEG shooting, providing both the flexibility of RAW and the convenience of a ready-to-share JPEG. The specific format of RAW files can vary between camera manufacturers, with common extensions including .CR2 (Canon), .NEF (Nikon), and .ARW (Sony).
