RAIDStatus

RAIDStatus is a term used in data storage to describe the current health and operational state of a RAID array. It is reported by RAID controllers, software-defined RAID implementations, and monitoring tools to summarize the array’s readiness and integrity. The status is derived from a combination of drive health data, parity consistency checks, rebuild progress, and the synchronization state of the array’s members.

Common statuses include Optimal (all drives healthy and parity consistent), Degraded (one or more drives failed but data remains accessible), Rebuilding or Resyncing (parity or data being reconstructed onto a spare), Verifying or Scrubbing (parity and data integrity checks in progress), Recovering (data reconstruction in progress after a fault), Failed (the array or data is inaccessible), Offline or Unavailable, and Hot spare in use (a spare drive is active while others rebuild). Some systems may also show Pending Initialization or Migration when the array is being configured or transformed.

RAIDStatus is used by administrators to trigger alerts, dashboards, and maintenance actions. In practice, the exact label mapping can vary by vendor; some devices expose high-level categories, while others offer more granular states. Rebuild progress is often presented as a percentage with an estimated time of completion, and SMART data may influence the reported status.

Limitations and considerations include the fact that RAIDStatus is not standardized across vendors, so similar labels may not correspond to identical conditions. Transient states can occur during rebuild or verification, and a healthy-looking RAIDStatus does not replace routine backups or comprehensive diagnostics.
