The acronym RA4 stands for "Rectification and Adjustment of 4th Order," indicating the polynomial order used in the geometric correction process. This procedure is designed to remove distortions present in raw sensor data, which can arise from various sources such as sensor optics, atmospheric refraction, the Earth's curvature, and the terrain's topography.

The core of the RA4Verfahren involves the application of a fourth-degree polynomial transformation. This complex mathematical model allows for a more accurate representation of the geometric relationships between the image coordinates and the ground coordinates, especially in areas with significant topographic variations or more intricate geometric distortions that lower-order polynomials might not adequately correct. To implement the RA4Verfahren, ground control points (GCPs) are essential. These are identifiable features with precisely known real-world coordinates, measured independently, that are then located in the imagery. By using a sufficient number of well-distributed GCPs, the polynomial coefficients are calculated, enabling the transformation of each pixel in the original image to its correct georeferenced position.

The output of the RA4Verfahren is typically an orthophoto, which is an aerial or satellite image that has been geometrically corrected to remove perspective distortion and terrain relief displacement, appearing as if it were taken directly from above. This makes the orthophoto geometrically accurate and suitable for precise measurements, mapping, and integration with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In some applications, the same process can be used to generate a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) or a Digital Surface Model (DSM) when coupled with stereo imagery or other elevation data acquisition techniques.
