Quemoy

Kinmen, also known as Quemoy, is a group of islands administered by the Republic of China (Taiwan). The Kinmen Islands are located in Fujian province, China, about 3 kilometers (2 miles) west of the mainland city of Xiamen. The main island, Kinmen Island, is the largest and most populous of the group. The islands are strategically important due to their proximity to mainland China and have a history of military conflict.

Historically, Kinmen was part of Fujian province and was inhabited by Chinese settlers. During the Chinese Civil War, the islands became a front-line position for the Republic of China forces after their retreat to Taiwan. The Battle of Kinmen in 1949 saw the People's Liberation Army attempt to capture the islands but ultimately fail. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Kinmen was frequently shelled by the People's Republic of China, leading to a heavily militarized presence on both sides.

In recent decades, tensions have eased significantly. Kinmen has transitioned into a tourist destination, attracting visitors interested in its military history, unique dialect, and traditional Min Nan architecture. The islands are known for their well-preserved fortifications, tunnels, and museums that chronicle the period of conflict. Kinmen is also famous for its Kaoliang liquor, a potent sorghum spirit. The economy relies on tourism, agriculture, and fishing. The population primarily speaks a dialect of Min Nan Chinese.
