Qadisiyah

Qadisiyah, also spelled al-Qādisiyyah, is a name used for a historic battle and for a modern Iraqi governorate. The most well-known reference is the Battle of al-Qādisiyyah, fought around 636 CE near the town of al-Qādisiyyah in Mesopotamia during the early Muslim expansion.

In the battle, the Rashidun Caliphate, under commanders including Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqās, defeated the Sasanian Empire. The victory effectively ended major Sassanian resistance in western Iran and enabled the further Islamic conquest of Persia and Mesopotamia. The battle is widely regarded as a decisive turning point in the Muslim conquest of Persia and had lasting cultural and political consequences for the region.

Al-Qādisiyyah Governorate is a province in central Iraq. Its capital is Diwaniyah (also known as Ad Diwaniyah). The governorate is named after the historical site of the battle and lies along the Euphrates River. Its economy is mainly supported by agriculture and related activities, with rural communities forming a significant portion of the province’s population.
