Põhiuuringu

Põhiuuringu is a small borough located in Antsla Parish, Võru County, in southeastern Estonia. It lies approximately 15 kilometres south of the county capital, Võru, and is situated near the banks of the Põheu River, which flows into the Viru Vaja catchment area. The borough falls within the South Estonian lowlands and is characterized by gently rolling fields, forested margins, and several small lakes.

The first written record of Põhiuuringu dates back to the early 15th century, when it was mentioned in a medieval land register as a minor settlement within the manor of Põhja-Permu. Throughout the centuries it remained a predominantly agricultural community, with subsistence farming and animal husbandry forming the core of its economy. Following the agrarian reforms of the 19th century, the village expanded modestly, and a local school was established in 1883. After Estonia regained independence in 1991, Põhiuuringu became part of Antsla Parish.

Today the population of Põhiuuringu is around 180 residents. Economic activity is still largely based on agriculture, but many inhabitants commute to nearby towns for work in manufacturing and services. The borough is served by a regional bus line that connects it to Võru and Tartu. Local landmarks include the 19th‑century St. John the Baptist Lutheran church, a village hall, and the Põhiuuringu Meadow, which is a protected area known for its diverse bog plant species. The community hosts an annual harvest festival in late September, celebrating traditional folk music, dance, and local cuisine.
