Päävyöhykkeen refers to the main belt of the asteroid belt, the region in the Solar System located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. It is the most populous region of asteroids, containing the vast majority of the known asteroid population. This belt is not a densely packed cluster of rocks as sometimes depicted, but rather a vast expanse of space with a significant amount of empty volume. The asteroids within the main belt vary greatly in size, from small pebbles to dwarf planets like Ceres, which is the largest object in the belt.

The composition of the asteroids in the main belt is diverse, reflecting the conditions in the early Solar System. Many are rocky and metallic, similar to the terrestrial planets, while others are rich in carbon compounds. The distribution of asteroids is not uniform; certain regions are depleted of asteroids due to gravitational perturbations from Jupiter, creating what are known as Kirkwood gaps. These gaps are orbital resonances that eject asteroids from those specific locations.

The origin of the main asteroid belt is a subject of ongoing scientific study. The prevailing theory suggests that it is comprised of leftover material from the formation of the Solar System that never coalesced into a planet. Jupiter's strong gravitational influence is thought to have prevented these protoplanets from forming a larger body. Studying the asteroids in the main belt provides valuable insights into the composition and evolution of the early Solar System and the processes that led to the formation of the planets.
