Pääulottuvuutta

Pääulottuvuutta is a Finnish term used to refer to the dominant or principal dimension of a system or data set. In multivariate analysis it is often understood as the dimension along which the most substantial variation occurs, closely related to the first principal component or the direction of maximum variance in a covariance matrix. The term translates roughly as "main dimension" from the components "pää" (main/principal) and "ulottuvuus" (dimension/extent).

Although widely understandable in Finnish technical writing, pääulottuvuutta is not a standard term in formal mathematics or statistics. In formal contexts Finnish writers typically use "pääkomponentti" (principal component) or simply refer to the leading eigenvector or eigenvalue. Pääulottuvuutta may appear in teaching materials, blogs, or discussions describing the concept of dimensionality in intuitive terms, or in interdisciplinary fields where Finnish terminology blends with English.

Usage is common in descriptions of data analysis and geometry. In a two-dimensional dataset, projecting the data onto the axis corresponding to the largest eigenvalue yields the axis of the pääulottuvuutta, capturing most of the data's variance. In physics or systems theory, it can denote the principal extent of a spatial or parametric dimension of a system.
