Päätösongelmat

Päätösongelmat are a class of computational problems in theoretical computer science that are known to be undecidable. This means that there is no algorithm that can solve all instances of these problems correctly in a finite amount of time. The most famous example of a päätösongelma is the Halting Problem.

The Halting Problem asks whether it is possible to determine, for an arbitrary program and an arbitrary input, whether the program will eventually halt (finish its execution) or run forever. Alan Turing proved in 1936 that no such general algorithm can exist. This fundamental result has profound implications for what can and cannot be computed.

Other well-known päätösongelmat include Post's Correspondence Problem and Hilbert's Tenth Problem. Hilbert's Tenth Problem, concerning the existence of integer solutions to Diophantine equations, was also proven to be undecidable. These problems often arise in the context of formal logic, computability theory, and programming language semantics.

The undecidability of these problems does not mean that no program can ever halt or that no specific instances of these problems are solvable. Instead, it implies that there is no single, universal procedure that can correctly answer the question for every possible input.
