Päästöveroilla

Päästöveroilla, or emissions taxes, are a type of environmental tax levied on the emission of pollutants. The primary goal of these taxes is to internalize the external costs of pollution, making polluters pay for the damage they cause to the environment and public health. By increasing the cost of emitting pollutants, päästöveroilla aim to incentivize individuals and businesses to reduce their emissions.

The concept behind päästöveroilla is rooted in the economic principle of Pigouvian taxes, named after economist Arthur Pigou. These taxes are designed to correct market failures where the price of a good or service does not reflect its true social cost. In the case of emissions, the social cost includes damage to ecosystems, health problems, and climate change.

International coordination is also important to prevent carbon leakage, where industries move to countries with less stringent environmental regulations.
