Päritolupiirkonnad

Päritolupiirkonnad, known in English as geographical indications (GIs), are signs used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. These signs can be names of places, regions, or in some instances, the country of origin. The purpose of a GI is to protect the reputation of the product and prevent its misuse by unauthorized parties.

The protection offered by geographical indications ensures that only products originating from the designated area and meeting specific quality standards can use the protected name. This benefits consumers by assuring them of the product's origin and characteristics, and it benefits producers by safeguarding their unique products from imitation and unfair competition.

Examples of geographical indications include well-known products like Champagne from France, Parma ham from Italy, and Darjeeling tea from India. These products are intrinsically linked to their place of origin, and their distinct qualities are often attributed to the local climate, soil, traditional production methods, and the expertise of the local producers.

The system of geographical indications is recognized internationally and is governed by agreements like the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS Agreement) administered by the World Trade Organization (WTO). Many countries have their own national laws and registration systems for geographical indications.
