Pyörremyrskyjä

Pyörremyrskyjä, the Finnish word for tornadoes, are violently rotating columns of air that extend from a thunderstorm to the ground. These powerful weather phenomena are characterized by their destructive potential, capable of causing significant damage in their paths. In Finland, pyörremyrskyjä are relatively rare compared to countries like the United States, but they do occur, particularly during the warmer months.

The formation of a pyörremyrsky requires specific atmospheric conditions. These typically include warm, moist air near the surface, cooler air aloft, and a significant change in wind speed and direction with height, known as wind shear. This instability can lead to the formation of supercell thunderstorms, which are the most common breeding ground for strong tornadoes. The rotating updraft within a supercell can then tilt and stretch, intensifying the rotation and eventually leading to a tornado touching down.

The visual appearance of a pyörremyrsky can vary. It is often visible as a condensation funnel extending from the cloud base. However, a tornado can be present even if the funnel is not fully formed or visible, as debris and dust lifted from the ground can also indicate its presence. The strength of a pyörremyrsky is typically measured using the Enhanced Fujita (EF) scale, which rates tornadoes from EF0 (weakest) to EF5 (strongest) based on the damage they cause. While most pyörremyrskyjä in Finland are likely to be of lower intensity, the potential for damage necessitates preparedness and awareness.
