Pysäköintipaikka

A pysäköintipaikka (parking space) is a designated area where motor vehicles can be left temporarily or for longer for the purpose of parking. It can be located on streets, in parking lots, or in structures. In Finland, its use is governed by municipal bylaws and national road regulations, with local authorities responsible for allocation, marking, and enforcement.

There are different types: on-street parking spaces along streets, often organized with parking bays and regulated by time limits, paid parking, or resident permits; off-street parking in private or public lots and garages, possibly requiring payment or permits. Some spaces are reserved for certain users, such as handicap parking or deliveries, and signage indicates restrictions.

Signage and rules: A parking area is indicated by traffic signs and line markings; paid parking uses meters or mobile apps; time limits and resident permits may apply; violations typically incur fines, with enforcement by municipal authorities or property managers. Vehicles may be towed for illegal parking.

Design and accessibility: typical dimensions for a standard parking space are around 2.3–2.6 meters wide and 4.5–6.0 meters long; accessible spaces require larger width and adjacent space, with clear approaches. Surface and lighting considerations, drainage, and accessibility compliance are important in planning. In Finland, municipalities strive to balance availability with safety and traffic flow.
