Pyörteissiirto

Pyörteissiirto, often translated as vortex shedding or vortex shedding phenomenon, refers to the oscillating wake created by fluid flow around a bluff body. When a fluid, such as air or water, flows past an object that is not streamlined, the flow separates from the surface of the object. This separation creates vortices, or swirling regions of fluid, that are shed alternately from opposite sides of the body.

The periodic shedding of these vortices causes fluctuating pressure forces on the object. These forces can lead to vibrations in the body, a phenomenon known as vortex-induced vibration (VIV). The frequency of vortex shedding is typically characterized by the Strouhal number, a dimensionless quantity that relates the shedding frequency to the flow velocity and a characteristic dimension of the body.
