Puzzlelinguistics is an interdisciplinary field that examines how language functions within puzzles and how puzzles, in turn, reveal aspects of linguistic structure, processing, and cultural practice. The term is not widely standardized in professional linguistics, but it is used in theoretical discussions and in hobbyist and educational contexts to describe the study of language as it appears in word games, cryptic challenges, and related activities. Researchers typically approach puzzlelinguistics from cognitive, sociolinguistic, and computational perspectives, seeking to understand how people parse, create, and solve language-based puzzles.

Core topics encompass linguistic features used in puzzles, puzzle design principles, and solving strategies. Areas of interest include morphological and syntactic constraints in puzzle construction, phonological features that enable hearable clues, semantics and pragmatics in misdirection and clueing, and the role of pragmatics in reader inference.
