As a verb, purport means to claim, profess, or appear to be something; as a noun, it can refer to the apparent meaning or intended purpose of an action or text. In everyday usage, a statement may purport to do something, such as "the report purports to cover all aspects" or "the letter purports to be from the company." The term often signals that the truth of the claim is uncertain or disputed.

In legal and scholarly contexts, purport frequently describes what a document or testimony claims to be or achieve, regardless of veracity. The adjective "purported" is commonly used to indicate claimed status without confirmation, as in "a purported cure" or "the purported author." The word carries a formal tone and does not itself imply deceit, though it is commonly used when the legitimacy of the claim is in doubt. Etymology traces to Old French porporter, from Latin portare to carry, with the sense of presenting or bearing a claim.
