The device used for this purpose is called a pulse oximeter.

Pulse oximetry works by emitting light at two different wavelengths into the skin and measuring the amount of light that is absorbed and reflected back. One wavelength is absorbed by oxygenated hemoglobin, while the other is absorbed by deoxygenated hemoglobin. By comparing the ratios of these two wavelengths, the pulse oximeter can calculate the oxygen saturation level in the blood.

The most common application of pulse oximetry is in the measurement of peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2), which refers to the oxygen saturation in the blood of the extremities, typically the finger or earlobe. This measurement is crucial for assessing the adequacy of oxygen delivery to the tissues and for monitoring the effectiveness of respiratory therapy.

Pulse oximetry is widely used due to its simplicity, portability, and non-invasiveness. It provides real-time data and is particularly useful in emergency situations where quick assessment of a patient's oxygen status is necessary. However, it is important to note that pulse oximetry is not a substitute for arterial blood gas analysis, which provides a more accurate measurement of oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood.
