Puikkohitsaus

Puikkohitsaus, also known as shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) or stick welding, is a widely used manual arc welding process. It involves using a consumable electrode covered in a flux coating. An electric arc is struck between the electrode and the workpiece, generating heat that melts both the electrode and the base material, forming a weld pool. The flux coating on the electrode plays a crucial role by vaporizing and creating a shielding gas that protects the molten metal from atmospheric contamination. Additionally, the flux forms a slag layer that solidifies over the weld bead, further protecting it during cooling and aiding in the removal of impurities.

The electrode, often made of steel, is held in a welding gun, and the operator manually moves it along the joint to create the weld. The current can be either alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC), depending on the electrode type and application. Puikkohitsaus is versatile and can be used on a variety of metals, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. It is well-suited for outdoor applications and welding in windy conditions due to the protective slag and gas. Its simplicity, portability, and relatively low equipment cost make it a popular choice for maintenance, repair, and construction work. However, it requires skill to produce high-quality welds, and slag removal is an additional step in the process.
