Puhelinkaapeli

Puhelinkaapeli refers to the electrical wires used to transmit telephone signals. Historically, these were copper wires, often organized in large bundles that formed the telephone network infrastructure. These cables carried analog voice signals from a subscriber's home or business to the local telephone exchange.

Modern telecommunication networks have largely transitioned to fiber optic cables, which use light pulses to transmit data at much higher speeds and capacities. However, many older copper-based puhelinkaapeli networks still exist, particularly in areas where upgrades are ongoing or have not yet been completed. These copper cables can also be used for digital services like DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), which piggybacks on existing telephone lines.

The physical installation of puhelinkaapeli involved laying cables underground, overhead on poles, or within buildings. The connectors used at the ends of these cables, such as RJ11, were specific to telephone equipment. While the term "puhelinkaapeli" is closely associated with traditional voice telephony, its underlying technology and some of its infrastructure persist in supporting various telecommunications services. The transition to fiber optics represents a significant evolution in the technology that replaced the older copper-based puhelinkaapeli.
