Psykoanalyysi, also known as psychoanalysis, is a clinical approach to psychology and psychiatry developed by Sigmund Freud. It focuses on the unconscious mind and aims to understand and treat mental disorders by exploring repressed memories, desires, and conflicts. The psychoanalytic approach is based on the idea that many psychological problems are rooted in early childhood experiences and unconscious processes.

The core principles of psychoanalysis include the concepts of the unconscious, defense mechanisms, and the Oedipus complex. The unconscious mind is believed to contain repressed thoughts, feelings, and memories that influence behavior and mental health. Defense mechanisms are unconscious strategies used to cope with anxiety and stress, such as repression, projection, and denial. The Oedipus complex refers to the unconscious desire for the opposite-sex parent, which Freud believed is a crucial stage in the development of a child's psyche.

Psychoanalysis typically involves long-term, one-on-one therapy sessions where the analyst listens to the patient's free associations, dreams, and other expressions of the unconscious mind. The goal is to uncover and interpret these unconscious contents to gain insight into the patient's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Through this process, the patient may develop a better understanding of their own psyche and learn to manage their mental health more effectively.

Psychoanalysis has been influential in the development of modern psychology and psychiatry, but it has also been criticized for its focus on the unconscious and its use of interpretation. Despite these criticisms, psychoanalysis remains a valuable approach for understanding and treating mental disorders, and it continues to be studied and practiced today.
