Psalmist

A psalmist is a person who writes or composes psalms, which are sacred songs or hymns typically expressing praise, thanksgiving, or supplication to a deity. The term psalmist can refer to a variety of roles, including the original composers of psalms in ancient Israel, later Jewish liturgical composers, and Christian hymn writers.

In the Hebrew Bible, King David and other Hebrew prophets are often referred to as psalmists, as they are credited with composing many of the psalms. The Book of Psalms, also known as the Psalter, contains 150 poems and songs that express a wide range of emotions and spiritual experiences. These compositions are characterized by their lyrical and poetic language, and are often used in Jewish and Christian worship services.

In later Jewish tradition, the term psalmist referred to the cantors who composed and led the recitation of psalms in synagogue worship. These cantors were responsible for composing new melodies and arrangements for traditional psalm texts, as well as creating new psalms to reflect contemporary themes and emotions.

In Christianity, the term psalmist has been applied to hymn writers and poets who have composed sacred songs and hymns for worship services. Some examples of Christian psalmists include William Cowper, who wrote classic hymns such as "God Moves in a Mysterious Way," and Henry Francis Lyte, who composed the well-known hymn "Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven."
