Próteinum

Próteinum is a term used in speculative biology and in some fictional or theoretical discussions to denote a class of biopolym polymers that function similarly to proteins. In standard biochemistry, the term protein is used for such polymers, while próteinum is not part of accepted biological nomenclature.

Definition and characteristics: Próteinum are polymers composed of subunits that resemble amino acids but may include noncanonical residues or alternative backbones. They can fold into defined three-dimensional structures and carry out catalytic, binding, structural, or regulatory roles, mirroring the functional versatility of proteins. Some models permit modified chirality, expanded genetic coding, or synthetic backbones that confer greater stability or novel chemistry.

Synthesis and genetics: In speculative frameworks, genes or templating units encode próteinum sequences. Translation and assembly may occur on ribosome-like complexes or on entirely synthetic polymerizers. Pathways analogous to transcription and translation are sometimes proposed, together with non-ribosomal assembly for unusual subunits.

Status and usage: The term próteinum is primarily encountered in fiction, thought experiments, or discussions of alternative biochemistries. There is no established experimental evidence for próteinum as a real biological class.
