Présences

Présences is the plural form of the French noun présence, which translates to presence or being present. In French, présences is used to denote multiple instances of presence—people, objects, phenomena, or ideas that are manifested or encountered.

In philosophy, presence is a key concept about immediacy and how things appear to consciousness. Phenomenology emphasizes the givenness of objects in perception, while later traditions question the primacy of presence, arguing that meaning arises through trace, absence, or difference. Derrida’s critique of metaphysical presence argues that presence is never fully given and is always mediated.

In social and cultural analysis, presence refers to the felt or perceived availability and co-presence of actors.
