Prépositives, in linguistics, refers to adjectives placed before the noun, a position known as anteposed or preposed. This contrasts with postposed adjectives, which come after the noun. The prepositive position is common in French and is analyzed in relation to how meaning, focus, and style are affected.

In French, many adjectives can occur in either position, but the two orders carry distinct nuances. When an adjective stands before the noun, it often conveys evaluative, qualitative, or essential properties, and can create a more literary or emblematic tone. Cross-linguistically, languages differ in how freely adjectives can precede or follow the noun. In Spanish, for instance, certain adjectives before the noun can alter meaning (un gran hombre vs. un hombre grande), while Italian often allows both orders with nuanced differences. English uses prepositive adjectives in the standard order, but postpositive forms are rare and usually fixed or literary.
