Protonoverføring

Protonoverføring, also known as proton transfer, is a fundamental chemical process in which a proton (a hydrogen nucleus, H+) is transferred from one atom or molecule to another. This occurs when a species with a high affinity for protons, known as a Brønsted-Lowry base, interacts with a species that can donate a proton, a Brønsted-Lowry acid. The process involves the breaking of a bond to the acidic proton and the formation of a new bond to the basic atom.

Protonoverføring is a ubiquitous phenomenon in chemistry and plays a crucial role in a vast array of chemical reactions and biological processes. It is central to acid-base chemistry, where acids donate protons and bases accept them, leading to the neutralization of acids and bases. For instance, when hydrochloric acid (HCl) reacts with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), a proton is transferred from HCl to the hydroxide ion (OH-), forming water.
