Protoceratium
Protoceratium is a genus of fossil dinoflagellates. Dinoflagellates are a type of planktonic protist, and many are photosynthetic. Fossilized dinoflagellates, known as dinocysts, are preserved as organic-walled microfossils. Protoceratium is characterized by its distinctive cyst morphology, often featuring a generally spherical or subspherical shape with a prominent apical horn and variously developed archaeopyles (openings related to excystment).
The genus Protoceratium is found in marine sediments dating from the Jurassic period through the Cretaceous
Studying Protoceratium provides insights into the evolution of dinoflagellates and the paleoecology of Mesozoic seas. Their
