Protisistiens is an informal designation used in some biological literature to describe a diverse collection of unicellular and colonial eukaryotes traditionally labeled protists. It is not a formal taxonomic group and does not represent a single lineage. Instead, it serves as a working concept for discussing ecology, morphology, and evolution among various protist lineages.

Composition and diversity: Protisistiens includes a wide range of organisms with varied metabolisms—from photosynthetic algae to heterotrophs and mixotrophs.
