Proteiinisäätely refers to the complex processes by which cells control the production, activity, and degradation of proteins. This regulation is crucial for maintaining cellular function, responding to environmental changes, and ensuring proper development and health.

The synthesis of proteins, known as translation, is a primary point of regulation. This can be controlled at the transcriptional level, where the rate of messenger RNA (mRNA) production from DNA is adjusted. Gene expression can be turned on or off, or the amount of mRNA produced can be modulated. Following transcription, the stability and processing of mRNA can also be regulated, influencing how much protein can ultimately be synthesized.

Beyond synthesis, protein activity is tightly controlled. This often involves post-translational modifications, which are chemical changes made to a protein after its initial synthesis. Examples include phosphorylation, ubiquitination, and glycosylation. These modifications can alter a protein's shape, its interactions with other molecules, or its cellular location, thereby affecting its function. Allosteric regulation, where molecules bind to a protein and change its conformation, is another key mechanism for controlling protein activity.

Finally, protein levels are also managed through regulated degradation. Proteins have finite lifespans, and their breakdown is essential for removing damaged or no longer needed proteins and for controlling cellular signaling pathways. The ubiquitin-proteasome system is the primary pathway for targeted protein degradation in eukaryotic cells. Tight control over these synthesis, activity, and degradation pathways ensures cellular homeostasis and precise biological responses.
