Protectorate

A protectorate is a state that is guided and defended by another, more powerful state under a formal arrangement. In a protectorate, the protecting power typically handles foreign policy and military defense, while the protectorate retains a degree of internal self-government and its own local rulers or institutions. Sovereignty is limited in specified areas, and the protector can intervene in matters such as diplomacy, defense, and sometimes internal affairs as defined by the treaty or agreement.

Historically, protectorates emerged in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a way for imperial powers to extend influence without full colonization. They often allowed the protector to supervise defense, guarantee access to trade routes, or protect vulnerable states from external pressures, while preserving the local ruler’s ceremonial authority or limited autonomy.

Notable examples include the Bechuanaland Protectorate (now Botswana), established by Britain in 1885 and lasting until independence in 1966; the Trucial States in the Persian Gulf, a group of sheikhdoms under British protection that eventually formed the United Arab Emirates in 1971; and the Protectorate of Egypt, established in 1914 and ending with partial independence in the 1920s, though British influence continued for several decades.

Ending a protectorate typically occurred through negotiated treaties leading to full independence or dissolution of the arrangement. In modern usage, the term is relatively rare, and many former protectorates have become fully sovereign states. The concept is related to but distinct from suzerainty, mandates, and full colonies.
