Prosaattinen

Prosaattinen is a term in Finnish literature referring to the opposite of the poetic prose, known as runollinen. While runollinen employs poetic language, similar to that used in poetry, prosaattinen uses language in a more straightforward and clear manner, similar to that found in ordinary prose. This distinction is often used to classify various styles and techniques of writing in Finnish literature.

The concept of prosaattinen is closely tied to the development of Finnish literature, particularly during the modernist movement of the early 20th century. Writers such as Silius and Viljo Käki experimented with clear and concise language, often abandoning elaborate metaphors in favor of a more straightforward narrative style. This style allowed writers to focus on character development and storytelling, rather than relying on poetic language for effect.

Prosaattinen has been associated with the Salamurteen liike (Shockwave movement) in Finnish literature, a group of writers who sought to break away from traditional literary styles in favor of a more straightforward, almost reportorial style. Prosaattisen is also characterized by its focus on everyday life and realistic descriptions of people, their relationships and environments.
