Propionibakterier

Propionibacterium is a genus of Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, non-motile bacteria. These bacteria are commonly found in the skin and mucous membranes of humans and animals, and are also present in the soil and water. Propionibacterium species are known for their ability to produce propionic acid, which is used in the production of cheese and other fermented foods. They are also used in the production of certain antibiotics and as probiotics in dietary supplements.

The genus Propionibacterium includes several species, with Propionibacterium acnes being one of the most well-known. P. acnes is associated with acne vulgaris, a common skin condition characterized by the presence of blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. Other species of Propionibacterium are involved in the fermentation of various foods, including cheese, yogurt, and sauerkraut.

Propionibacterium species are typically aerobic, but some species can also grow under anaerobic conditions. They are catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. The genus is classified within the family Propionibacteriaceae, which also includes the genus Cutibacterium. Propionibacterium species are generally considered to be non-pathogenic, but some species can cause infections in immunocompromised individuals.
