Propietateak

Propietateak is the Basque plural noun for properties. It derives from the singular propietatea and is used to refer to both tangible possessions and abstract attributes. In everyday Basque, it often means assets or owned goods, while in academic or technical contexts it denotes characteristic features of objects or systems.

In philosophy and logic, properties are the predicates or attributes ascribed to things. They are usually classified as essential properties—those without which an object would not be what it is—and accidental properties, which a thing may lose without ceasing to be itself. Intrinsic properties depend on the object itself, whereas extrinsic properties depend on external circumstances.

In mathematics and the sciences, properties describe consistent features of objects, sets, or processes, such as symmetry, continuity, or density. In computer science and data management, properties are features or attributes of data objects; for instance, a database record may have properties like ID, name, and timestamp.

In law and economics, property refers to rights over resources, including real estate. The concept is often discussed as a bundle of rights—use, exclusion, transfer—defining who may access or dispose of an asset. Real estate is a common example of property in this sense.

Context determines meaning. When used in Basque texts, propietateak can refer to a person’s possessions, a property’s features, or ownership rights. The term thus functions as a versatile label for both tangible assets and abstract attributes.
