Prolinhidroxilázok

Prolinhidroxilázok are a group of enzymes that play a crucial role in the post-translational modification of proteins, specifically in the hydroxylation of proline residues. This modification is essential for the proper folding, structure, and function of many proteins, most notably collagen.

The most well-studied prolinhidroxilázok are the prolyl-4-hydroxylases (P4Hs). These enzymes catalyze the addition of a hydroxyl group to the fourth carbon atom of proline residues within specific peptide sequences. This hydroxylation is vital for the stability of the collagen triple helix, a defining characteristic of this structural protein. Without sufficient hydroxylation, collagen becomes unstable, leading to connective tissue disorders like scurvy, a deficiency in vitamin C, which is a necessary cofactor for P4Hs.
