Projektionsforvrængning refers to the distortion that occurs when a three-dimensional object is represented on a two-dimensional surface, such as a map or a screen. This happens because it's impossible to perfectly flatten the curved surface of the Earth onto a flat plane without altering certain properties.

The type of distortion depends on the projection method used. Common distortions include changes in area, shape, distance, and direction. For instance, some projections might accurately represent shapes but significantly distort areas, making polar regions appear much larger than they are in reality. Other projections might preserve area but distort shapes and angles.

Different map projections are designed to minimize specific types of distortion, making them suitable for particular purposes. For example, Mercator projection is often used for navigation because it preserves angles and shapes, allowing for straight-line courses to be plotted. However, it greatly exaggerates areas at higher latitudes.
