Progenotoksien is a term used in some fringe scientific or pseudoscientific contexts, often associated with theories proposing that genetic material from past generations, sometimes referred to as ancestral DNA or "progenitors," can directly influence the health and traits of descendants. This concept suggests that dormant genetic information or even "toxins" passed down through the germline could be activated under certain conditions, leading to a range of physical or psychological effects.

The idea of progenotoksien is not recognized by mainstream genetics or medicine. Established scientific understanding of inheritance focuses on the transmission of DNA sequences from parents to offspring, which dictate the potential for certain traits and predispositions. While epigenetic modifications, which are changes in gene expression that do not alter the underlying DNA sequence, can be influenced by environmental factors and, in some cases, inherited, the concept of actively harmful ancestral "toxins" residing in the genome is not supported by current research. Proponents of progenotoksien theories often cite anecdotal evidence or interpretations of epigenetic phenomena that diverge significantly from scientific consensus.
