The preparation workflow typically includes several steps. First, the specimen geometry is selected according to the standard and material requirements. This is followed by cutting or machining to near-net size using tools and methods that minimize deformation and heat input. Final machining then brings the specimen to exact dimensions. Edges are deburred and rounded as needed to avoid stress concentrations. Surface finishing may include polishing or etching when metallographic evaluation is planned. The specimens are cleaned and dried to remove oils, coolants and contaminants, and conditioned or stabilized if specified, to prevent unintended changes in properties. Each specimen is marked and labeled for traceability, and relevant information such as material, heat treatment, batch or lot, and process parameters is documented.
