Produktionssättningar, often translated as "production methods" or "modes of production," is a key concept in Marxist theory. It refers to the specific way in which a society organizes the production of goods and services to meet its needs. This organization is understood to be comprised of two fundamental elements: the forces of production and the relations of production.

The forces of production encompass the means of production and human labor. The means of production include the tools, machinery, raw materials, land, and technology used in the production process. Human labor refers to the skills, knowledge, and physical effort of the workers. Together, these elements represent the society's capacity to produce.

The relations of production, on the other hand, describe the social and economic relationships that people enter into as they produce. These relations determine who owns and controls the means of production, how the products of labor are distributed, and the nature of the social hierarchy that arises from these arrangements. For instance, in a capitalist mode of production, the relations of production are characterized by the ownership of the means of production by a capitalist class and the sale of labor power by a working class.

Marx argued that the mode of production is the foundation of a society's social, political, and intellectual structure. Changes in the forces of production, such as the development of new technologies, can lead to contradictions with existing relations of production, eventually triggering social revolution and the emergence of a new mode of production. Historical examples include the transition from feudalism to capitalism.
