Produktbacklogen

Produktbacklogen is a term used in agile product development to describe the ordered list of work required to build and maintain a product. It serves as the single source of truth for what the team aims to deliver and why, containing features, enhancements, bug fixes, technical work, and non-functional requirements.

The backlog is typically owned by the Product Owner, who prioritizes items based on value, risk, dependencies, and effort. Items are described as product backlog items (PBIs), often in the form of user stories or epics, and include acceptance criteria, an estimate, and any relevant context. Regular backlog refinement sessions—sometimes called grooming—are used to add detail, split large items, re-estimate, and adjust priorities so items are ready for upcoming sprints.

Backlog management emphasizes clarity and readiness. A well-maintained produktbacklog balances strategic goals with technical debt and customer needs, ensuring the development team works on what delivers the most value next. It also acts as input for sprint planning, while the sprint backlog represents the subset of items selected for a specific sprint.

Backlog items are continually evolving: new ideas can be added, items can be reordered, and entries may be removed or deprioritized as priorities change. Common prioritization approaches include value versus effort, risk reduction, dependencies, and stakeholder input. The concept is closely related to the broader product roadmap and release planning, providing a structured path from high-level goals to concrete deliverables.
